1. How often does a driving license of automobile need to be renewed?

A driving license of automobile needs to be renewed once every six years from its issue date. A car driver should apply for renewal of his or her driving license in highways supervision authorities at least one month before an expiry date. To make people remember this easily, an expiry date is set as the same day as their birthday. If a renewal of the driving license is not arranged on or before the expiry date, a fine of NT$1,800 needs to be paid.

2. What should I bring if I would like to renew my driving license?

Please bring you ID Card, a residence certificate, an original driving license, a photo and a fee of NT$ 200 with you

3. If my driving license is lost or damaged, what should I prepare to apply for its reissue?

Please bring an original copy of your ID Card or alien residence certificate, a damaged driving license (submission is not needed if it is lost), a seal, two photos, and a fee of NT$ 200 to proceed with reissue.

4. What should I prepare to proceed with a change of a driver's name?

Please bring an original copy and photocopy of Your ID Card, a household certificate transcription (within 3 months as a valid period), or an original copy and photocopy of an alien residence certificate. And also bring an original driving license, a photo ( 1-inch black-and-white photo or color photo with gloss surface, plain background, face clearly showing five organs, no hat worn, frontal bust, and taken with recent six months (a processed digital photo will be not accepted), and a fee of NT$ 200. All these need to be brought to proceed with change matters.

5. How should a professional driving license of automobile be proceeded with regarding inspection?

Please go to one of hospitals exclusively engaged in National Health Insurance to proceed with a physical examination (those aged over 60 need to take extra examinations such as X-ray and ECG examination). Then bring examination results, ID Card, an original professional driving license. (If your driving license reaches its expiry date, please remember o bring one photo to renew it.) Take an inspection within one month before or after an inspection date. Please proceed with an inspection once every three years. If an inspection takes place over one month after an expiry date, a fine of NT$ 300 needs to be paid. If it takes place over 1 year, a driving license needs to be cancelled. A professional driver aged over 60 for a small vehicle needs to proceed with an inspection once every year and renew a driving license with a valid period of one year.

6. What should I do if a professional driving license of automobile is cancelled because an inspection is not taken on or before an expiry date?

Please bring your ID Card, a cancelled driving license, two photos, and a fee of NT$ 200 to change into an ordinary driving license of the same type of vehicle. If you drive your car before changing into an ordinary driving license, you will be treated as a person who does not have a driving license. If you would like to pursue a professional driving qualification, you need to proceed with a test registration and attend a driving test.

7. If I hold a R.O.C driving license of automobile, how should I convert it into an International driving permit?

Please supply your ID Card (an original one or a photocopy), alien r residence certificate, original driving license, two 2-inch photos (black-and-white photos or color photos with gloss surface, plain background, face showing clearly five organs, no hat worn, frontal bust and taken with recent six months (a processed digital photo will be not accepted) , your English name (the same as that printed in your passport), and a fee of NT$ 250. An international driving permit's valid period is three years at most. If the rest of your original driving license's valid period is less than three years, your international driving permit's valid period will be the same.

8. If I would like to convert an international permit into a R.O.C. driving license, what should I do?

If you, an applicant, are a R.O.C citizen, please bring your ID Card, driving license of a foreign country or Mainland China . (A foreign driving license should be authenticated by Consulate-General of the R.O.C., Taipei Representative Office in a foreign country, or other authorized authorities of Ministry of Foreign Affair. If your driving license is written in a foreign language, please enclose its copy of Chinese translation. A driving license issued by Mainland China needs to be authenticated by one of non-governmental organizations set up, assigned or entrusted by Executive Yuan.) Also bring one copy of Registration Form for An Original Automobile Driving License, a qualification of physical examination made by one Health Office or national hospital (its valid period is one year) and one photo (1-inch black-and-white photo or color photo with gloss surface, plain background, face clearly showing five organs, no hat worn, frontal bust, and taken with recent six months (a processed digital photo will be not accepted) to convert into a R.O.C. driving license. If you are not a R.O.C. citizen, a conversion from a foreign driving license into R.O.C. driving license needs to follow principles of equality and reciprocity. 9. How can people from Mainland China who hold their own country's driving license change to a R.O.C driving license?

For people from Mainland China who hold their own country's driving license, a driving license issued by Mainland China cannot be converted into a R.O.C. driving license. They should bring a stay permit (or a documentary proof for residence of over one year), a documentary proof of residence for over three months (under the circumstances of being allowed to do so), a driving license issued by Mainland China, an authentication of one of non-governmental organizations set up, assigned or entrusted by Executive Yuan, a residence certificate and a qualification of a physical examination. After taking a written test for a driving license and passing its qualification, they can have a R.O.C. driving license.

10. Besides taking my physical examination in health offices and public hospitals, to what other hospitals can I go?

Besides taking your physical examination in health offices and public hospitals, you can also go to Bureau of National Health Insurance or Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital of Kaohsiung Medical University. and Jianren Hospital in Nazih District to proceed with it.

11. How can a professional driving license be converted into an ordinary driving license? In the future, how can I convert from an ordinary driving license into a professional driving license?

1. Please proceed by bringing your ID Card, professional driving license, two photos, and a fee of NT$ 200 with you. (Note: to those who have not proceeded with an inspection between one month and one year after an inspection date printed in a driving license, something extra needs to be also prepared -- one copy of a qualification of a physical examination issued by one of the hospitals engaged with the National Health Insurance and a fee of NT$300. Then, a qualification of a professional driving license can still remain.)

2. In the future, if you would like to covert it back to a professional driving license, please bring your ID Card, driving license, two photos, one copy of a result of physical examination issued by one of national or private hospitals and a fee of NT$ 200 to proceed with the procedure.

12. If a driver is dead, what should be done about his or her original driving license?

If a driver is dead, his or her original driving license should be returned to local highways supervision authority as soon as possible.

13. Suppose I, as a driver, hold a driving license and have its normal conditions. Because I have something wrong with my health, it causes a problem which cannot meet the content of Article 64 of “Regulations Governing Road Traffic Safety.” Then, how should I proceed with renewal of a driving license?

You can submit your driving license to your local highways supervision authority. Then, please bring one copy of a result of physical examination issued by one of national hospitals, health offices, or assigned hospitals (a valid period is one year) with you and follow the content of Paragraph 7 of Article 65 of “Regulations Governing Road Traffic Safety” to proceed with renewal of a driving license.
